Call it what you like... it's what I do.
Contemporary Expressionism... Non-Objective... Non-Representational... Experimental are a few of the monikers that have been attributed to the art form others may call Mixed Media...
For me, Mixed Media is about taking risks, breaking the rules and making mistakes. It's about working through feelings of trepidation, growing and coming out the other side. Though watermedia is my base, everything else in the world can come into play with mixed media … once you know the fundamental rules of design, you can then break them and your heart will begin to soar.
Mixed media is a realtively new venue for me... and for me, painting in and of itself, is all about the process, the challenge. It is about gaining self-confidence as an artist and finding oneself along the way. It is about listening to that intuitive side and learning to let go... it is understanding that as a artist, as a diva, as a wonderfully fabulous person... only you can set you free.
In mixed media I work intuitively, however, in the far reaches of my mind are the fundamentals that I worked thirty years to understand, and then learned to let go. Having begun as a realistic painter (as most of us do), I wanted to share a few of my Contemporary Expressionism (don't cha just love the sound of that??) pieces to show you just how far and wide you can go...
There are no boundaries... you are limited only by your own imagination. I use collage, assemblage, experimental, paper, junque, found objects... acrylics, watercolor, oil, pastel, oil pastel - you name it, if I can get it to attach to a substrait!!! It's mine. As I've said before...once you know the rules…you can break them and your heart will begin to soar.
